Maths

In Maths this week, on Wednesday and Thursday, we are learning how to add 3 digit numbers together using a formal written method.

The method we are using is the Expanded Column Method

1. if the calculation is 346 + 236 first expand your numbers so 346 expands out  to be 300 + 40 + 6

and 236 becomes 200 + 30 + 6.

2. Place one number underneath the other one.

     300 + 40 + 6

+   200 + 30 + 6

3. Then add each column - add the ones first so 6 + 6 = 12. Now 12 ones can't fit in the ones column so the ones part stays there but the tens part is placed in the tens column.

     300 + 40 + 6

+   200 + 30 + 6

                        2

               10

4. After that, add the tens column - so 40 + 30 = 70 add the extra 10 = 80. Don't forget the extra 10!

     300 + 40 + 6

+   200 + 30 + 6

                80 + 2

               10

5. Next add the hundreds column - so 300 + 200 = 500

     300 + 40 + 6

+   200 + 30 + 6

     500  + 80 + 2

               10

6. Finally add up the answer

     300 + 40 + 6

+   200 + 30 + 6

     500  + 80 + 2 = 582

               10

In class we have been practising this method using some calculations. Please complete the examples given and then using a dice create some of your own.

Theme - Writing

Our new theme started this week - we received a letter from Mr Cadbury with a newspaper article inside. We have uploaded it so you can see what it said. We have been invited to help in a Top secret mission. To make sure we can take part we have to apply for the job.

Your tasks this week are:

1. Read the newspaper article so you know what you are being asked to do.

2. Read the two example job applications for a job as a zoo keeper -  look very carefully at both of them. Write a paragraph explaining which person you think  should get the job and explaining why.

3. Apply for the job as a Secret agent using the ideas you can borrow from the examples and the application form to help you.

Additional Activities

Remember to read the Bug Club Books you have been allocated.

Practise your spellings.

Learn your Timestables.

And go on TT Rockstars.

Theme

We found out the Agent M - the Meerkat on the mission, is in Mexico City. So we need to find out as much as we can about this place.

Use an atlas, or Google maps, or Google to help you to answer the following questions. You could even take a walk around Mexico city using Google maps!

-Which country is he in?

-Which continent is he in?

-Which city is he in?

- Which countries share a border with his current location?

- Which seas/oceans does the country have a coastline with?

- What is a gulf?

- What is a peninsula?

- What is a volcano?

- Which gulfs, peninsulas and volcanos are in the country in which he is located?
