Homework in Year 6

Following a review of the timetable in every year group, a school-wide adaptation is being made to homework. Currently, the setting and reviewing of homework takes between 30 to 60 minutes a week. This homework is then completed inconsistently, with some children putting a lot of time into their work and others not completing it all.  Therefore, the decision has been made that the hour currently used for homework would be better spent delivering an additional lesson. There are also two key areas of the curriculum where children really benefit from daily practice, so we feel it is better for parents and carers to really focus on these rather than trying to complete a wider set of homework where these two key aspects can be forgotten. From this September, each week we would like every child to complete the following:

  1. Reading. Your should read for 10 minutes or more every day. This reading activity needs to be recorded in your reading journal, as this will ensure we can work together to track progress.
  2. Times tables. This comes in two parts. First, you needs to spend time learning the times table that we have set you. You will each have a different times table and your learning will be checked through the use of a weekly times table challenge. Second, you are expected to complete a minimum of 10 minutes of TTRockstars activity over the course of the week. This will be in the form of Garage sessions, which will be set on Friday evenings and need to be completed by the following Wednesday morning.

In Year 6, you will also be set revision homework, to support you in their preparation for the Key Stage 2 SATs. This is in the form of 3 CGP books, which will form the basis of your homework from now up until SATs. You will need to complete the tests within in them as detailed in the document below. Remember not to worry if you come across a question you find tricky - we may not have covered that area yet, or you may just need a little guidance. Pop a circle around the question number and we will go through it when you bring the book back in.

As always, the homework week runs from Friday to Wednesday, so we expect you to bring the book you have been working in into school every Wednesday. If you are finding it difficult to get this work done at home, please speak to us so we can support you with this.
