VISION -Being an Artist at Lyppard Grange Primary School

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, we are proud to deliver an ambitious Art and Design curriculum; provided by Kapow which is built upon the framework of the National Curriculum. Thoughtfully designed, it aims to empower children with the creativity, knowledge, and technical skills needed to engage with an ever-evolving world.

Our primary aim is to equip children with the core knowledge and essential skills they need to be Secure, Engaged, and Equipped for life (SEE). Through artistic exploration, experimentation, and expression, we nurture confidence and capability, ensuring every child can thrive in a rapidly changing future.

We take a thematic approach to learning, embedding Art and Design within engaging topics that allow children to make meaningful connections across disciplines. This enriches their understanding of artistic concepts, techniques, and historical influences while fostering their ability to think critically and creatively. Each lesson is carefully crafted to develop our school’s core learning values: curiosity, adaptability, perseverance, courage, teamwork, communication, and independence.

Our Art and Design curriculum not only builds artistic and creative excellence but also supports the development of well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future challenges and opportunities. INTENT:

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum, following the Kapow Primary scheme of work, is designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and encourage pupils to explore and invent their own artistic expressions. Rooted in expert-led pedagogy, our curriculum nurtures talent, develops artistic skills, and fosters an appreciation for art and artists across cultures and throughout history.

Aligned with the National Curriculum, our scheme fully supports pupils in achieving key stage attainment targets and follows the National Society of Art and Design's progression competencies. As an Artsmark partner, Kapow Primary enhances our commitment to high-quality arts education, empowering our pupils to create, experience, and engage with diverse artistic and cultural opportunities.

At Lyppard Grange, our Art and Design curriculum reflects our core values of being SECURE, ENGAGED, and EQUIPPED for life:

  • SECURE: Our curriculum helps children develop self-awareness, confidence, and resilience. By expressing themselves through art, they build self-esteem, recognize their strengths, and understand different perspectives, all while fostering a strong moral compass.
  • ENGAGED: We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their learning, participate in artistic communities, and develop empathy through exploring different cultures and artistic traditions. Art is a platform for students to connect with their local, national, and global communities, fostering an appreciation for diversity.
  • EQUIPPED: Through Art and Design, children enhance their literacy, numeracy, and communication skills. They gain adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for an ever-changing technological world. Art encourages a growth mindset, perseverance, and the ability to express thoughts and ideas confidently.

By integrating our school’s vision with the Kapow Primary scheme, we ensure that Art and Design at Lyppard Grange not only enriches creative expression but also develops well-rounded, thoughtful, and capable individuals who are prepared for the future.

IMPLEMENTATION:

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum is designed to ensure that children become Secure, Equipped, and Engaged for Life (SEE) through creative exploration and skill development. We follow the revised Kapow Art scheme, which is structured around five key strands:

  • Generating Ideas
  • Using Sketchbooks
  • Making Skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of Artists
  • Evaluating and Analysing

Our curriculum enables sequenced progression, allowing children to build upon their skills and knowledge over time. The formal elements, which are integral to the National Curriculum, are embedded throughout all units. Through a spiral curriculum model, key artistic skills are revisited and developed with increasing complexity, ensuring pupils become secure in their understanding, equipped with technical skills, and engaged in their artistic journey.

To support a broad and enriching experience, our units of work are organised into four core areas:

  • Drawing
  • Painting and Mixed Media
  • Sculpture and 3D
  • Craft and Design

Each unit is designed to scaffold essential, age-appropriate learning while remaining flexible enough to integrate with the thematic approach delivered at Lyppard Grange Primary School. This ensures that pupils develop a deep understanding of artistic concepts and techniques while making meaningful cross-curricular connections.

Creativity and independent artistic expression are at the heart of our approach. We encourage pupils to make their own creative choices and decisions, fostering confidence and individuality in their work. By engaging with art in a meaningful way, pupils create unique, knowledge-rich outcomes that reflect their personal experiences and ideas. This approach not only nurtures artistic skills but also prepares our pupils to be Secure, Equipped, and Engaged for Life in their creative and academic pursuits.

IMPACT:

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum, based on Kapow’s scheme of work, encourages children to actively engage in evaluating their own work, discussing their progress, and making informed decisions about how to improve. Through regular reflection and participation in discussions, pupils develop not only their knowledge of Art but also the confidence to articulate their learning journey, strengthen their metacognitive skills, and gain a deeper understanding of how to refine their work.

The impact of our Art and Design curriculum is assessed through both formative and summative methods. Pupils' progress is documented in their sketchbooks, with pre and post learning tasks completed at the beginning and end of each unit, as well as through ongoing learning conversations during lessons. This approach allows us to monitor their development and ensure they are continually improving their skills and understanding.

By the time they leave Lyppard Grange Primary School, pupils will have built a strong foundation in Art and Design, equipping them with the creativity, skills, and confidence to thrive in Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Our expected impact is that children will:

  • Create imaginative and expressive work, developing and documenting their ideas and experiences.
  • Develop proficiency in a range of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpture.
  • Critically evaluate and discuss creative works using subject-specific vocabulary.
  • Gain knowledge of influential artists and understand the historical and cultural significance of their work.
  • Achieve the end-of-key-stage expectations as set out in the National Curriculum for Art and Design.

Through this curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of Art and Design, nurturing creativity and self-expression in every child.
