The Lyppard Grange Primary School Empowering children to be secure, engaged and equipped for life.

Forest School

VISION

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, we envision a world where every child can develop a deep connection with nature, encouraging a lifelong love for the environment and a sense of stewardship for our planet. We firmly believe in the transformative power of outdoor learning, which enables children to explore, discover, and engage in play within the natural world. This approach ignites their curiosity while nurturing their physical, emotional, and social well-being.

Our Forest School programme embodies our dedication to promoting holistic development in every child. It serves as a space of wonder, where each child is supported on their unique journey of self-discovery and personal growth. In this environment, children build resilience, confidence, and a profound sense of belonging to the world around them.

We aspire for our children to take the lead in the organisation and structure of Forest School, crafting their own learning paths. This child-led ethos empowers children to acquire essential life skills, including independence, risk-taking, analytical thinking, and a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others. Ultimately, we encourage our students to challenge themselves and step beyond their comfort zones, fostering growth in a nurturing and supportive environment.

INTENT

Grounded in the six core principles of Forest School, our sessions offer children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 the chance to explore and engage with the natural environment on a weekly basis, throughout the year.

Our Forest School promotes holistic development by allowing children to learn at their own pace through play, exploration, and discovery. Sessions are held in all seasons and weather conditions, except in cases of high winds or thunderstorms, prioritising safety above all. By providing regular, immersive outdoor experiences, we aim to build children’s confidence, resilience, and teamwork, while nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the environment.

We recognise the significant contribution that outdoor learning makes to children's overall well-being and academic success, supporting their social, emotional, and physical growth in ways that complement classroom learning.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Lyppard Grange Primary School, our Forest School programme is delivered by a qualified Forest School leader, supported by trained staff. Each session is carefully planned, taking into account the individual developmental needs of each child. The activities are learner-led, aimed at fostering curiosity and independence. Children are encouraged to explore the natural environment at their own pace, engaging in tasks such as den building, bug hunting, creating natural art, and participating in storytelling around a campfire. Tools and resources are introduced in a safe and controlled manner, empowering children to acquire practical skills while managing risk responsibly.

Our Forest School leader has an Outdoor with Pediatrics First Aid qualification and undergoes continual professional development to remain aligned with best practices and current research in Forest School and outdoor education.

Safety remains our utmost priority; we conduct thorough risk assessments for each session, guaranteeing that the outdoor learning space is secure while allowing children to engage meaningfully with their surroundings.

IMPACT

The impact of the Forest School programme at Lyppard Grange Primary School is far-reaching. By engaging in regular outdoor learning, children develop key skills that support their personal and academic growth. One of the most notable impacts is the increase in self-confidence and independence. Children are encouraged to take the lead in their learning, make decisions, and solve problems in a supportive, natural environment. This autonomy fosters resilience, enabling them to persevere in the face of challenges, both inside and outside the classroom.

Social skills are significantly enhanced through cooperative play and teamwork. The children learn to communicate, share ideas, and support one another in group activities, improving their ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships. Furthermore, the programme noticeably impacts children’s physical health. The outdoor setting promotes active, hands-on participation, fostering physical development and motor skills.

The benefits extend to their emotional well-being, as the calming effect of nature helps to reduce anxiety and stress, creating a positive mindset. Ultimately, the programme instils in children a lifelong appreciation for the environment and a sense of responsibility for the natural world around them.
