Reading
The children who were in school last week changed their books as normal, bringing home the new books they have read with an adult during the course of the week.
For children not in school last week, we have allocated 2 books on Bug Club at the appropriate level for your child to read and answer the questions to the quizzes. These were allocated on Sunday afternoon. We will ensure all children (not attending school) have the minimum books allocated to them as of Sunday afternoons each week. Please see instructions for how to login to Bug Club in Reading journals.
For additional books please use this link for online books. You can find books appropriate to the coloured level they are currently on- lilac, pink, red etc.

Focus activity- Writing
After reading the story from Farmer Duck called 'Pig Gets Lost' We are going to create some missing posters for other animals on the farm who have escaped! Remember to draw your animal in the first box and write your description underneath sitting your letters on the line.
Please create your sentence for us like we did in the modelled writing session in the morning briefing, remembering your capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, tricky words and making sure all of your letters are formed correctly.
Challenge – use a range of conjunctions (such as 'because' 'and' 'but') to create an extended sentences.
Here is a video showing parents how to do the writing process at home;
https://www.lyppardgrange.worcs.sch.uk/writing-eyfs/
The phonics strips and tricky word mats the children have in front of them whenever they do writing can be found on the Reception home learning section here;
Remember, children only need to be spelling the words on the tricky word bumblebee mat correctly. The rest of their writing will be 'phonetically plausible'. It is important the children are sounding out the words independently and recording the sounds they can hear from the letter strips just like we do in the modelled writing sessions on Teams.
For example a typical sentence would look like; The duck is lost and is sad. Plees can you help fighnd him. He is yelloa and fluffee.
Focus activity- Phonics Activity
In the morning briefing, the children will flick through the sounds already taught, including tricky words, and then be introduced to the 'ar' sound and the action that goes with it. They will be shown how to form it, articulate the sound and the Jolly phonics story that goes with it. Please login to Education City and play the 'ar' game. See instructions on Reception Home Learning page to find out how to login to Education City.
There are lots of games you can play with these sounds and sounds taught already such as pairs games, hangman, writing on ground grass, sky boards, magnetic letters, eye spy etc.
More games can be found at https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/Phase3Menu.htm
and on Espresso which you can login to through the SIMS ID login. Espresso has word and sentence building games as well as some useful videos of how to make the sound. Click on Foundation, then Literacy, Phonics, Polly’s phonics. Please let the children use the activities found on the right hand side for the 'ar' sound.
Tuesday 2nd March
Focus activity- PE
When Farmer Duck is not working, he loves to read. His favourite book is called ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. Now Spring is coming, and Farmer Duck has so much work to do, he doesn’t have time to read and fit in his weekly yoga, so he has found a Cosmic Kids Yoga all about his favourite story. Farmer Duck has heard how much you like and how good you are at yoga, so he thought you might like to try it. Follow the link below and it will take you to Cosmic Kids Yoga; We’re going on a Bear Hunt.
Don’t forget to ask your grown-ups to send us photos of your yoga poses
Focus activity- Creative
Farmer Duck is very proud of his animals, especially his prize pig, chicken, and sheep. He has seen paintings of farm animals by the artist Vivienne Monument. We would like to surprise Farmer Duck by making a painting of his favourite farm animals.
An artist first makes lots of sketches of the subject they are going to paint. Once they have practised sketching, they then decide on which picture they think is the best and they sketch it ready for painting.
We would like you to practise sketching these three animals that Vivienne Monument painted.
Once we are all back in school, we will all create our own Vivienne Monument inspired paintings to give to Farmer Duck.
Looking at the paintings by Vivienne Monument, she has made sure the sketch of the animal fits the page, if it was too little it would be hard to see and if it is too big you won’t be able to see the whole of the animal.
The sketches only need to be the outline of the animal.
We have some 'How to draw farm animals - step by step.' for you to download to help you.
Don’t forget to ask your grown-ups to send us photos of your sketches.

Wednesday 3rd March
Focus activity- Outdoors
Today we would be going to Forest School.
Farmer Duck was cheered up so much when he went outside and saw all the colourful string and stick ornaments that you made for him last week. He is so impressed with your weaving skills he would like to set you a challenge and weave an ornament called a ‘God’s eye’ or ‘Nature’s eye’.
When you go on a walk with your grown up or are in the garden you need to collect two sticks as long as your wrist and as fat as your thumb. You are now going to put one stick on top of the other to make a cross shape. Join the two sticks together with string, wool or ribbon then ask your grown up to tie your wool on one stick right next to the centre join. Click on the link below to watch a video showing you how to weave around your stick. Once you have got the rhythm you can change colours to make your weaving more colourful.
If you have enjoyed your weaving, why not make some more, and turn them into a mobile? Find an interesting stick, it could be a twisty, bendy stick or a stick with lots of smaller branches coming from it. Decorate your stick, wrap coloured wool, ribbon or string around it or you can paint it. You can make different sized ‘eyes’ and hang them from the stick, then hang the mobile or ‘eyes’ from the trees to make them look colourful.
Please remember we would love to see a photograph of your weavings.
Focus activity- Phonics Activity
In the morning briefing, the children will flick through the sounds already taught, including tricky words, and then be introduced to the 'er' sound and the action that goes with it. They will be shown how to form it, articulate the sound and the Jolly phonics story that goes with it. Please login to Education City and play the 'er' game.
Thursday 4th March
Focus activity- Mathematics
Poor old Farmer Duck is feeling very sad because he must work so hard on his Farm and he doesn’t have anyone to help him. In school we are going to bake some bread rolls for Farmer Duck to eat when he has finished his work to cheer him up. At home, we would like you to do some baking for Farmer Duck too. You don’t have to bake Farmer Duck bread, you could make him some cupcakes, flapjacks, scones, biscuits, or anything you think he would enjoy.
Today we would like the children to so some baking with a focus on using the language of weighing and capacity. At this stage, children do not need to be weighing/measuring accurately by reading scales. In Early Years, children are expected to use “everyday language” of weight and capacity for example, heavy, light, heavier, lighter, full, empty, gram, litre etc. As the children are baking you could ask them to tell you when the jug is half full or ask them if the bowl was heavier before or after you added the ingredients.
There is an Education City game called Measure Up where the children practise using and understanding this language further as well as some additional activity sheets. Measure up can be found in the Mathematics section of Education City.

Focus activity- Phonics Activity
In the morning briefing, the children will flick through the sounds already taught, including tricky words, and then be introduced to the two new tricky words for this week which are ‘said’ and ‘one’. Please show your child these words written down and on their tricky word bumblebee mat provided in the workshop packs. The actions for ‘said’ is to put two fingers to the corner of your mouth and move them away and for 'one' hold up your index finger. Please watch the teacher model these in the briefing.
The children enjoy coming up with sentences for the new words, playing stations with them where they have to run around the outdoor classroom to find the word and splat the tricky word where they are all laid out and first person to splat the word wins.
Please play from the selection of 'Tricky" word activities found on Espresso circled below.
