Tuesday 13th July

Focus activity- Writing

In the Morning Briefing, the children will reminded that both crews were shipwrecked last week in the storm with the Crocodiles ending up on Shell Island and the Elephants on Skull Rock.

Luckily as we were walking along the beach this morning this bottle had washed up on the shore.......

Could we use it to send a message to get help....?

Please create your message for us like we did in the modelled writing session in the morning briefing, remembering your capital letters, question mark, finger spaces, tricky words and making sure all of your letters are formed correctly.

Challenge – Write 3 sentences using 3 different conjunctions (such as 'because' 'and' 'but')

Here is a video showing parents how to do the writing process at home;

https://www.lyppardgrange.worcs.sch.uk/writing-eyfs/

The phonics strips and tricky word mats the children have in front of them whenever they do writing can be found on the Reception home learning section here;

Remember, children only need to be spelling the words on the tricky word bumblebee mat correctly. The rest of their writing will be 'phonetically plausible'. It is important the children are sounding out the words independently and recording the sounds they can hear from the letter strips just like we do in the modelled writing sessions on Teams.

For example a typical sentence would look like;

Plees help us we are stuck on shell ighlund and we have no ship. We need to be rescued come quick.

Focus activity- Phonics Activity

In the morning briefing, the children will flick through the sounds already taught, including tricky words.

Please login to Education City and play the 'Stamp and grunt' game.

See instructions on Reception Home Learning page to find out how to login to Education City.

There are lots of games you can play with these sounds and sounds taught already such as pairs games, hangman, writing on ground grass, sky boards, magnetic letters, eye spy etc.

More games can be found at https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/4

Focus activity- Creative/ KUW

Float or Sink?

Ahoy their matey!

Colin the crocodile and Edward the elephant decided to build a pirate ship out of the classrooms junk modelling. When it was bath time, they put their ship in the bath to see if it would float – it didn’t!

Can you have a go at building a pirate ship?  You may have some toys you play with like Lego, stickle bricks or mobilo that you could build your ship with.  Or, for an extra challenge, why not build your ship out of junk modelling from your recycling bin, just like Colin and Edward.

What do you think you need to use to make sure it floats?  Which items would be the best?

Will your pirate ship still float if the sea gets a little ‘choppy’?

Using a straw,  blow on to the water near your ship, the water will look as though it has waves.  Start off blowing very gently, you don’t want to soak your ship!

If you make your ship out of junk modelling material, how long can the ship stay in the water before it starts to sink?

Here are some of the ships that Colin and Edward had a go at making after their ship sank.

Don’t forget to ask your grown up to send us some photos!

Thursday 15th July

Focus activity- Maths

This morning we have been on a treasure hunt and have found some treasure but need your help to count how many coins we have. Remember to count carefully pointing to each coin as you say the number so that you don’t miss any out.

Challenge: Can you count in 2s, 5, or 10s to find out how many coins are in the treasure chests?

Can you solve our counting in 2s maze? Think about how we count in 2s at snack time for the number that comes next!

Additional Activities

Ahoy there matey!

We would like you to practice your subtraction skills.  Do you remember that subtracting means taking away so your answer will always be smaller?

Don’t forget to read the number sentence.  Look at the symbols:

-  is the symbol for subtraction

 = is the equal’s symbol.

When you read your number sentence don’t forget to use the grown up word ‘subtraction’

Read each subtraction number sentence, find the answer then look to see what colour you need for that number, then colour the part of the picture that has that answer.

Use your toys/coins to help work out the answer.

Ahoy there Shipmates!

For this activity, you are going to need 20 pirate coins with numbers 1 – 20 on. You can print off and use the coins we have provided or you can make the coins at home with some foil or with paper.

When you have got your 20 coins and they all numbered, put them into a box that can be your treasure chest. Give your treasure chest a shake so the coins are all jumbled up and then take 5 coins out. Read the numbers on the coins carefully and then see if you can put them in order from smallest number to biggest number. When you have done it, put the coins back into the chest and give it another shake. Then you can play all over again! How many tens and how many ones are in each number?

Pirates must be very fit, there are a lot of jobs that need doing on the pirate ship to keep it clean and sailing safely.

If the pirates are sailing on the sea for a long time, they stay fit and flexible by carrying out yoga moves.

This is one of their favourite yoga programmes, you’ve guessed it! Cosmic Kids Yoga.

Follow the link below and it will take you to Cosmic Kids Yoga;  Popcorn and the Pirates.
