Beetles, bugs and butterflies
The children in EYFS had a great day out at Lower Smite Farm this week as part of their work on ‘The Great British Bug Hunt’. Despite the wind and rain, they searched for minibeasts in the woods, overturning stones and logs to discover woodlice, snails, slugs, spiders, worms and even great-crested newts! This was accompanied by a session at the pond, using the nets to dip for creatures before examining their findings in the examination trays. The children were excited to have found a water-boatman, a waterlouse and an array of lavae, the most exciting being a mayfly lavae which metamorphosed in front of their eyes, spreading it’s wings before flying away. As ever, the children were incredibly well-behaved and good-mannered and a credit to the school.
